This standard applies to three grades of kerosene-type aviation turbine fuel, consisting entirely of petroleum-derived hydrocarbons, naturally occurring non-hydrocarbons and additives as specified herein. Kerosene-type aviation turbine fuels are distillates having a minimum flash point of 38°C. Grade JET A has a maximum freezing point of -40°C, and Grade JET A-1 and GradeF-34 have a maximum freezing point of -47°C.

Grade JET A and Grade JET A-1 fuels are normally used in civil aviation operations. F-34 is a NATO code number for a fuel that is normally used for military applications.

Limitations for Use -- Aircraft operators should consult their aircraft manuals for the type of fuel, fuel additives and any temperature-related or other limitations.

Temperature Limitations -- When temperatures are close to the fuel freezing-point, fuel operability problems may be experienced. JET A, with a specification freezing point of -40°C, is not intended for use during extremely cold weather conditions or when the ambient temperature is close to, or below, -40°C. It also requires more restrictive use than JET A-1 or F-34 fuels. For more information concerning temperature limitations, seeTransport Canada's Airworthiness Notice B021 (par. 2.1.2) and par. 8.4.

The testing and evaluation of a product against this standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this standard has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish appropriate health and safety practices in conjunction with any applicable regulatory requirements prior to its use.
